If your house has solid stone or old brick walls, lime is usually what it was built with, and it is usually what it needs. Lime lets old walls breathe. Cover them in cement and the moisture gets trapped, which leads to damp, crumbling plaster and that musty smell nobody wants.

Why lime matters in older buildings

Old walls do not have a cavity. They deal with moisture by letting it in and letting it out again. Lime plaster and render work with that, while cement works against it. Swapping cement for lime is often the single best thing you can do for a damp old house.

Inside and outside

We use lime for internal plastering on stone and brick walls, external lime render and repairs to existing lime finishes. We match the mix to the building and can do traditional finishes as well as smoother, more modern looking ones. Lime can also be limewashed, which gives older buildings a soft, natural finish that cement simply cannot match.

It takes a bit more time

Lime cures slowly and needs looking after between coats, especially in hot, cold or windy weather. We plan the job around that rather than rushing it. If you are not sure whether your walls need lime, ask us. We will tell you straight, and we work in both lime and cement.
