It comes down to how your walls were built. Get this wrong and you can end up with damp problems that are expensive to fix.
Old stone and solid brick walls
If your house has solid stone or old brick walls with no cavity, lime is almost always the right choice. These walls were built to let moisture in and out. Cement render seals the surface, traps that moisture inside and leads to damp, crumbling plaster and mould. Lime lets the wall breathe the way it was designed to.
Modern block and cavity walls
For newer block or cavity wall houses, a standard sand and cement render is perfectly fine and usually the more cost effective option.
